Description

The Early Childhood Education (ECE) Basic Certificate Program for learners who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing launched in fall 2023. It is a fully online program specifically adapted with ASL interpretations and extended accessible formatting for deaf and hard of hearing learners.

This project was made possible through extensive collaboration within the UBC community. Dr. Janet Jamieson and cohort advisor Lisa Meneian from Early Childhood Education spearheaded this initiative, with extensive accessibility and interpretation support through UBC’s Centre for Accessibility.

LDDI supported this project from its earliest stages through to its current implementation. We have provided learning design and technology expertise, and multimedia production of ASL-interpreted and captioned video contents. These critical components have helped improve the accessibility of this cohort’s program materials.

Goals

The goals of this project are:

  • To provide a fully accessible learning experience for learners who are deaf or hard of hearing;
  • To prepare these learners to work in the early childhood sector in BC so they can provide critical care to children who are deaf or hard of hearing.
