Studio B – Discovery Lab is a hands-on learning space located in the Neville Scarfe Building, Room 1009, in the UBC Faculty of Education (FoE). It supports FoE instructors in exploring digital technologies through curated tools, workshops and collaborative opportunities.
With rotating exhibitions of educational software and platforms, Studio B fosters innovation in teaching and learning. Instructors can book student field trips and workshops or connect with the LDDI team for expert guidance.

Vision
Studio B – Discovery Lab provides FoE instructors with a dynamic space to explore new and emerging technologies and investigate their educational potential. It offers hands-on opportunities to engage with digital tools, supported by LDDI’s experienced team of learning designers and technologists. We also collaborate with other units at UBC to offer expertise and hardware that might not otherwise be available to FoE instructors.
Instructors can bring their classes on field trips to Studio B, facilitating student learning and experimentation. Featured exhibitions are regularly refreshed, ensuring that FoE educators remain at the forefront of emerging educational technologies. We also offer a selection of workshops on topics such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, podcasting and more. Field trips and workshops can be booked using our booking request form.

Music Education & AI: Innovations, Challenges, and Possibilities
Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping the music landscape — from composition and performance to education and analysis. This workshop will explore the evolving relationship between AI and music, highlighting creative techniques, notable case studies, and emerging ethical concerns. Participants will examine the role of AI in music education today, weighing its benefits, challenges, and future potential. A range of tools will be introduced for learning, transcription, production, and experimentation, including platforms like Melody Scanner, Tone Transfer, and Udio. The session will conclude with a hands-on group activity designed to spark discussion, creativity, and critical thinking around the role of AI in musical learning and expression.
