How to Use BEd Course Templates
The following Canvas ‘starter’ templates were developed by the Learning Design Manager in the Teacher Education Office and are available for BEd Inquiry Instructors and Faculty Advisors.
Please see the information below and email LDDI to request one of these templates for your Canvas course.
Once you have a template in your course, you can edit it as needed. You can also copy previous content into your Canvas shell. If you need any assistance, LDDI is here to help you.
Inquiry Course Starters:
Course content starters are available for Inquiry courses EDUC 450, EDUC 451, and EDUC 452. A blank Canvas course shell will be automatically created for your course. You can copy previous course content into this course shell or request that LDDI copy one of the content starter templates into the shell. Instructors will gain access to the course shell once appointments are complete and students will be auto-enrolled. The course will not be visible until the instructor publishes and makes it available to students.
When requesting a course copy or template from LDDI please include the following:
- A link to the canvas course you would like content copied into.
- The name of your course including course code, section and term (e.g. EDUC 450 970 2022W1).
- Specify which template you would like OR Specify which course you would like the content copied from (including course code, section and term) OR Request a blank canvas course (often called a shell) if you would like a practicum hub made for you.
Example email:
| Hello LDDI,
I would like my course from last year EDUC 450 970 2022W1 (add link to Canvas course here) copied into my upcoming course, EDUC 450 970 2024W1 (add link to Canvas course here). |
How are A and B in the course titles different?
The templates with letter A refer to Elementary and Middle Years Inquiry course sections and the templates with letter B refer to Secondary Inquiry course sections. Where there is no letter beside a template, it is appropriate for use by either A or B sections.

BEd Practicum Hub Starter
Non-credit Canvas shells are a valuable way for faculty advisors to communicate with their teacher candidates. Faculty advisors can request a non-credit course shell for this purpose (by emailing LDDI) and can also request either the practicum hub starter template or the previous year’s course content to be copied.
When requesting a BEd Practicum Hub Starter for the year from LDDI, instructors can choose from the following options:
- Copy the previous year’s Practicum shell into a new Practicum Shell (select this option if you had a shell last year that you would like to use again). Please note the name of your previous shell if known (Eg. John Doe Practicum Hub 2023/2024).
- Create a new Practicum Hub Canvas Shell and apply the BED Practicum Starter template.
- Create a new Practicum Hub Canvas Shell and do not apply the template (leave it blank).
Example email:
| Hello LDDI,
I would like a Practicum Hub Starter for the 2024-25. Please copy my 2023-24 Practicum shell (insert name of your previous year’s shell) into a new 2024-25 Practicum Shell. |
