Hypothesis is an annotation tool designed to facilitate collaborative and interactive online discussions. It allows users to add comments, annotations, and discussions to web pages, PDFs, and other online content. Through the power of social annotation, it can make online discussions more meaningful, productive, and engaging.

Features

  • Browser Extension: Hypothesis offers a browser extension that allows users to annotate web pages directly from their browsers. This extension works with popular browsers like Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.
  • Versatile Annotation: Users can annotate a variety of digital content, including web pages, PDFs, and other online materials, providing a versatile platform for collaborative research, online education, and content analysis.
  • Collaborative Annotation and Discussions: Hypothesis emphasizes collaborative annotation, allowing users to view annotations made by others and engage in threaded discussions within the context of specific annotations. This feature fosters interactive and collaborative learning experiences.
  • Privacy and Accessibility: Hypothesis prioritizes user privacy, allowing individuals to control the visibility of their annotations. Additionally, the tool is designed to be accessible to users with disabilities, promoting inclusivity in the user experience.

Pilot

During 2023, UBC’s Learning Technology Hub piloted Hypothesis. The pilot demonstrated that its pedagogical benefits can carry across different course contexts. Teacher teams believed that Hypothesis enhanced students’ collaborative learning experiences, facilitated student connections, and provided valuable guidance for course instruction. Similarly, students expressed that the interactive features positively impacted their involvement with both the course content and their peers.

After the pilot phase, LT Hub Leadership decided to centrally support the use of Hypothesis outside of Canvas.

Using Hypothesis

Although the Hypothesis integration with Canvas exhibited potential, there is currently no funding available for comprehensive integrated support. Instead, instructors and students can utilize the open-source, web-based version of Hypothesis by creating a Hypothesis account on the vendor’s website.

Orientation to Learning Technologies for Instructors

During this orientation workshop, new Faculty of Education instructors explored the services and learning technologies available at UBC. We looked into how technology can be used to improve your teaching experience, and how to find support if you need it. This session covered:

    • Overview of UBC Learning Technology Ecosystem;
    • UBC Technologies;
    • UBC Technology Services;
    • Intro to the Canvas LMS.

UDL Fellows Program – 2024 Cohort

During this workshop, LDDI helped faculty with their Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Fellows Program applications. We provided consultation regarding pedagogical solutions; technical support and recommendations; evaluation strategies; project management; budget planning; and liaising with other units.

LDDI Game Club

LDDI successfully hosted a game event aimed at gathering before the holidays and seizing the opportunity to support filling the selves of the  AMS Food Bank. Our festive LDDI Games Day Fundraiser occurred on November 28 at 12pm in room 1008.

Pause on the Support of Ally

As of Friday, November 24th, the accessibility tool Ally has been disabled in all Canvas course shells and will no longer be available to use. The pilot has recently concluded and the Learning Technology Hub (LT Hub) has decided to pause support of Ally. The tool can no longer be requested to be enabled in any future courses, including 2023W2 courses. Learn more about LT Hub’s decision to pause central support for Ally.

At this time, LT Hub has not listed a new technology or tool that will succeed Ally. However, we have an eLearning Student Help & Resources shell that highlights Canvas’ built-in accessibility features and other alternatives students can use for improved accessibility. If you want to direct students to this section within the shell, please use the following link: Accessibility.

TEC Expo, or Technology Enhanced Classroom Expo, was created so faculty, students, staff, and guests can learn from each other. Each year we bring the Faculty of Education and wider UBC community together in the Scarfe foyer and online to share our biggest success stories and challenges when it comes to teaching with technology.

TEC Expo 2023

The Technology Enhanced Classroom (TEC) Expo was created as an annual event designed to showcase and celebrate interesting and innovative uses of technology in face-to-face, blended, and online classrooms within the Faculty of Education. TEC Expo was open to all members of the UBC community, across disciplines and University locations.

The tenth TEC Expo was a two-day-long celebration, on November 7th and 8th. It consists of a combination of in-person and virtual engaging conversations.

Halloween Games Day

LDDI hosted spooktacular Halloween Games Day in Scarfe 1008. You had the option to bring your own games or join one of ours, giving everyone the chance to connect with some fabulous folks over some friendly competition.
